Workstations are furniture that allow hired Workers to apply their Skill to craft items. Items craft faster at higher worker skill, up to the limit of the applicable workstation. For this reason, upgrading workstations allows your workers to apply their full skill in crafting.

When clicking on a workstation, a pair of numbers such as 28 / 30 or 39 / 32 will display. In the second case -- 39 / 30 -- the 39 will be in red. The second number is the maximum skill supported by the workstation at its current level of upgrades. The first number is the sum of worker skills. (See the example below.) If the first number is greater than the second, then the skill is capped at the second. In our two examples, 28 / 30 indicates the workstation is of an appropriate level for the current workers. 39 / 30 indicates the workstation should be upgraded.

See also Interface: Workstations and Workers

Workers that are not hired do not provide any Skill. Upgrading a workstation will increase the maximum Skill of a type that is put toward crafting items. A Workstation will not function if there are no workers of that Skill type, even if Town Buildings provide Boost bonuses to that Skill. Similarly, items of a Skill type cannot be crafted without a Workstation in the Shop.

For example, if you have hired the Armorer and the Blacksmith, their total Metal Crafting will be applied to a Metalworking Station. If you later unlock the Tinkerer, she will not add to the Metal Crafting total unless you hire her. If there is a Town Boost from The Forge, that amount will add to your Metal Crafting total.
